What's New and Exciting with Cat Man Do

Spring is here! Although you wouldn’t know it from today’s weather. It was in the 30’s today here in New York City, and it felt like it. The cold weather didn’t keep the clients away, however. We were booked solid at our hospital (Manhattan Cat Specialists) today. Luckily, nobody was really sick. Mostly rechecks and vaccines.

One nice thing about spring is…kittens!

I’ve decided to ramp up our kitten adoption program this spring and summer. As most of you know, our hospital works with the rescue group For Animals, Inc. to help place cats and kittens into loving, responsible homes. In the past seven years, we’ve placed about 230 kitties into homes. The last few years haven’t been as successful as previous years, however, I hope to see that change in 2010, as we’ve increased our hours (now open Sundays and extended weekend hours) and are increasing our staff, which should give us enough employees to help care for the kitties while we search for homes for them. (It’s a lot more work than you’d think.) We’re in the process of hiring a veterinary assistant to replace Kamilla when she leaves in August (Kamilla has been accepted to Cornell University’s veterinary program; we’re so proud of her!), and I’ve made taking care of the adoption kittens a major part of the veterinary assistant’s job description. And with our marketing whiz, Brad, now logging two days a week at our hospital (minimum), I imagine that the adoption kittens will be zooming out of our hospital and off to their new homes quicker than ever.

April 30th is National Hairball Awareness Day (I’m not making this up, I swear), and I’m proud to announce that I am now the official spokesperson for the FURminator, that grooming brush that helps remove fur from cats so that they don’t swallow it, helping control those dreaded hairballs. I had heard of the device before (some of my clients were raving about it), but had never tried it myself. I asked the company if they could send me one before I’d agree to be a spokesperson. It arrived in the mail a few days later. I have to say, it’s amazing. I can’t believe how much fur I removed from my cat Crispy’s coat. When I was done, it was like I had removed an entire kitten from her coat. So yes, I’m happy to be their spokesperson. More details on this to come in April.

I also made my vacation plans! I leave on Thursday night May 27th, and return Wednesday, June 2nd. The destination? Lisbon, Portugal! In my quest to see all of the world’s major cities before I die, this one is a biggie. As most of you know, I try to photograph cats in every country that I travel to, and then write an article (or at least a blog post) about it. Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Greece, and Thailand were very fruitful in that regard. Vietnam and Cuba were not. (Do communists have a problem with cats?) Actually, my last trip to Budapest, Vienna, and Prague was also pretty disappointing, cat-wise. Let’s hope Portugal is teeming with felines.

Lastly, we've got an exciting Spring E-Newsletter on the way, so be sure to add yourself into the mailing list.  Plus, Brad tells me he's going to give the Cat Man Do blog a makeover and upgrade! I cannot wait to see the new look and features to come.
